NSU baseball takes to the diamond

        The RiverHawks played the Fall Classic Exhibition games Sept. 25 and 26 at 1 p.m. and Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. on the baseball field at NSU. The Fall Classic is part of their pre-season and they played against Tonkawa, Carl Albert and North Arkansas College.

        ¨We are trying to put our players together and in a game situation. That is why we play the Fall Classic and we also play for the fund raising to get money for our baseball program,¨  Head Coach Sergio Espinal said.

        The RiverHawks play against these colleges to get playing time during this preseason, raise some money for the program, get to know each other as a team, and what they roles are going to be on the baseball field playing together. 

        ¨Our expectations for these games are to win every game and every inning, ¨ Assistant Coach Nash Garcia said.

         This is what will get the team prepared for the coming season beginning Feb. 1, 2011.

Trombonist, Conrad Herwig to perform with NSU Jazz Ensemble

Under the direction of Dr. Tommy Poole, director of jazz studies and assistant professor of music, the NSU Jazz ensemble is set to perform with Trombonist, Conrad Herwig, Thursday, Oct. 7. Herwig, originally from Lawton, has recorded 19 albums as a leader. His newest album, “The Latin Side of Wayne Shorter,” on Half Note Records, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2009. Herwig has been a featured member in many well known bands in the jazz community, along with being an inductee to the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame. 

The NSU jazz ensemble that will perform with Herwig is a group of highly qualified students that are selected by audition. The band performs two concerts each semester at the NSU Jazz Lab. Since created in 1993, the Jazz Lab has hosted several renowned jazz musicians. 

“We are very excited to have Mr. Herwig back,” said B.J. O’Shea, Jazz Lab manager.

Located at 316 N. Muskogee Ave, Tahlequah, the jazz Lab is open to both university students and the community. The concert begins at 7 p.m.  at the NSU Jazz lab, tickets are $6 with university student I.D. and $12 for general public. A record setting Momentum

     The Baptist Collegiate Ministries took about 65 students to Momentum this year. The BCM Intern associate Kim Eubanks, said it was the biggest group they have taken so far, and one of the girls who attended received Christ.

     “The best Momentum I’ve ever been too,” said Eubanks.

     Momentum was Sept. 10 the BCM left around 3 p.m. for Oklahoma City and returned about 2 a.m. The speaker for Momentum was Afshin Ziafat. He was evangelistic, and challenged the students to make changes in their lives for Christ. Jeff Johnson was the highlighted music artist that led the praise and worship.

       Momentum focused on mission opportunities for college students. The setting or theme was a coffee house, where they had two NSU BCM students join other students on stage. Thirty-five other schools were represented at momentum.

       Some events coming up at the BCM include Alex’s Lemon-Aid stand Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The stand will benefit children with cancer.

NSU Improv Team is working on laughs

     Look out NSU, there is a new group at NSU and they are here to make everyone laugh. This group is the NSU Improv Team.  The team of 13 improvisers has been handpicked from a group of people who have a passion for improv comedy and making people laugh.

     “This is gonna be a lot of fun,” said Israel Lister, Tahlequah senior, founding member and financial officer of the NSU Improv Team. 

     Those who are not familiar with improv comedy can go to YouTube and search for “Whose line is it Anyway?”. That is improve comedy at its best. And when they say that everything is made up it is not an exaggeration, the improvisers have never done that performance before and will never do it again.  

     The group meets every Tuesday and Sunday in the John Vaughan Library.  There they play improv games and practice for performances.  The comedy group has big plans for the future including performances at NSU and eventually statewide. Other plans include coming up with a better name than The NSU Improv Team.     

VCO faces possible termination

        The Visual Communication Organization is going to hold a meeting Monday in the library reference area. This meeting could be the last.

  “There has been multiple meetings where no one has shown up. Now, if this meeting turns out the same way, there will be no need for the group,” said VCO President Brennon Stickel, Tahlequah, junior.

  Attendance is important if interested in the group. There will be elections for a Senator, information for internship opportunities and people there to help with any camera or Photoshop problems.

Library works to create Information Commons

There are some interesting new developments happening at the John Vaughan Library.

“We are planning an Information Commons and would like the input of Students, Staff and Faculty," said Brandon Oberg, instructor of Library Services.

That is right; the library is in the planning process of adapting the first floor into an Information Commons and wants some input on it.  The concept is new so, Library Focus Group sessions are being hosted. This is in order to allow all different views and wants to be discussed and debated. More meeting space, access to video equipment, and functions or materials are just a few of the hot topics discussed.

The first of four sessions will be in Library Lab Room 105 Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.  The sessions will last 45 to 90 minutes and food will be available to attendees. Space is limited however, so those wishing to attend will have to RSVP for one of the 10-15 slots by contacting either Brandon Oberg - oberg@nsuok.edu, Dana Letts - letts@nsuok.edu, or Rachel Whitaker - whitakra@nsuok.edu . NSU Jazz Lab prepares upcoming shows

The NSU Jazz Lab is one of the main performance theatres in the Tahlequah community. Built in the early 90s the jazz lab brings a wide variety of entertainment to the community.

“The Jazz Lab brings lots of music and cultural aspects of music,” said Sarah Braguiere, manager of Jazz Lab. “There are performances such as: classical recitals, university events and jazz to classical recitals.”

With two big band and jazz ensembles coming up, the Jazz Lab will be filled with a variety of entertainment and fun in all aspects of music.
