In the past two weeks Greeks on the NSU campus have raised more than $1,800 for two different philanthropies.
On Sept. 8, the Phi Sigma Kappa held Mud on the Tires. This event consisted of sororities providing money and competing in mud wars. It was held right behind the Wyle resident hall. The Phi Sigma’s set the mud pit up with tires for an obstacle course, balls for dodge ball, and provided rope for tug-of-war. The process sounds dirty, but the sororities raised a great deal of money.
“The sororities provided over $1,200 which will go toward the Special Olympics,” said Robert Neuzil, Phi Sigma Kappa member.
Similar to Mud on the Tires, Wednesday, Sept. 15, the Delta Zeta’s hosted Turtle Tug. This event allowed all sororities and fraternities to participate in a Jell-O war, and helped the member of Delta Zeta raise money for their philanthropy the Speech and Hearing Impaired. A few days previous to Turtle Tug the members had jars set up for each sorority and fraternity. Anyone on campus could donate to their cause and help which ever fraternity or sorority earn money for the event.
“The Greek community helped use raise over $650 for our philanthropy,” said Christie Fullerton, Colcord, sophomore. “The philanthropy aspect of Greek Life is overlooked; all of the sororities and fraternities do their part to raise money each year for their own causes.”
